Blogisode 8: The Most Ambitious Crossover Of All Time?

"The city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots and I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense"
- Hawkeye
   Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

Iron-man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-man, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and so on and on. As one of, if not, the biggest movie of the year, draws just days near (or probably passed, judging by when you read this), it truly does seem to be the highlight cinematic event that it poses to be. You've probably already read or seen a bunch of videos and articles about 'Everything to know before Infinity War' or 'The Six Stones: What are they?'. So what's the point of this article, you ask?

Well, not the way you would think.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done an amazing job in its world building. From seeming to start off with a relatively unknown character at the time, at a premise which was widely considered important at the time (The Afghan War) with Iron Man, all the way to an eventual king of a hidden kingdom bemidst to the world, and yet tackling another issue quite relevant to today's day and age through Black Panther. Eighteen films in, and yet we crave more from all corners of the Marvel tandem, giving us emotions and depth for our paper page characters, tackling all sorts of issues. But you've read the title. 'The Most Ambitious Crossover Of All Time', bringing characters from all corners of their universe (seen/unseen), to battle the world-conquering Titan, Thanos. That's what you've probably heard from almost every opening to every article/video based on the movie, right? But unlike the public boast of 'The Most Ambitious Crossover Of All Time', it wasn't the mention of intrigue about this, that struck a nerve to me, but (and I'm not kidding), the memes that followed through with this line. Referencial Context as follows:-

You read that right, a blog about a meme.
You've probably seen a bunch of these, when scrolling across social media. And that's the discussion of today's blog, a crossover.

Now, what is a crossover? Guessing by the looks of things, and by the idea of the memes earlier, you can tell its sort of a clash between various sides from various ends of the spectrum battling or uniting over a common cause. You can imagine an 'n' number of them, say James Bond meeting Johnny English, Batman meeting Iron-Man (Battle of the Billionaires), Jon Snow meeting Deadpool, Hannibal Lecter meeting The Joker, or Michael Scott meets Andy Dwiyer meets Joey Tribiani meets Barney Stinson (Now that's a crossover I definitely would pay for).

Now, if you've read the comics, (which with all the recent slate of movies and tv shows out there), you would know that crossovers are pretty much a usual thing, with 2-3 events made every year. Probably the prominent ones in recent times being, Injustice (Yeah the comic and the game series as well), Avengers v X-men, the original Marvel Civil War, Spider-verse, Dark Nights Metal, Multiversity and Marvel Secret Wars II. As cool as it sounds, they're more or less reserved to their own universe. But hey, that's not all there is, and oh boy-o-boy, are there some weird ambitious' ones. Here are some of the weirdest:

1. Marvel V DC:

Probably any comicbook-geek's wet dream right here, which upon hearing right now, you would probably demand for a movie like that. Picture it, Thor hammering Superman, Batman vaulting Iron-man, and Iron-man hitting on Wonder-woman. As cool as it sounds, the comic lineup was a one-time thing, leading to mix-match universe of characters from both universes, like a Wolverine-Batman mashup named Darkclaw, and his arch-nemesis fusion of Sabretooth-Joker mashup called The Hyena. Weird, I know, I recommend googling it (Amalgam comics). Now, if only those big-shot Hollywood producers could eventually ideate a concept like this, looking at you Disney (*wink wink*).

2. Archie meets The Punisher:

Yeah, young 90's teenage heart throb meets army veteran assassin at a high school dance. If you've watched both Riverdale ( though I hate how the character's pitched by the CW, full high end modelized singer dude with abs, for some reason, with 'sexy-eye' face complex) and The Punisher, you can tell how the weirdness plays out. Though no wildly graphic action outbursts here cause kids (*cough cough*), but involves a highly dramatic kidnap plot, linked with both characters. Highly recommended.

3. DC/Looney Tunes:

Six one-shot issues with ever loving characters from the 5 minute 'Looney Tunes' episodes meeting the nitty-gritty, edgy yet fun heroes from DC. One of the vaguest crossovers ever heard, yet  one of the coolest. Stories of satire involving Superman and Bugs Bunny, noir detective tale featuring Elmer Fudd and Batman, and a Martian space drama of Marvin the Martian and Martian Manhunter. Geeky, I know. Think of it, as a one time meeting between Chota Bheem and Sakthimaan battling some 'Ladu Chors' (dumb, I know, Sigh) and some back-up plot involving some nuclear warefare in 'Dholakpur' (I think of weird things sometimes🙃).

Now if you're still here after that glimpse of geeking out, firstly, 'Hey man, Thanks for staying. Appreciate it :)'; secondly, crossovers sometimes get carried over in real-life. For starters, let's look at probably the first time we might've seen such a thing. Going back all the way to the first grade, when we met math problems. You know, the questions like 'Johny had 5 apples, he gave 1 apple to Suzie, how many apples does Johny have now?'. The literal crossover of Math and English!!!

Later on, as times pass, we meet Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A crossover featuring science having three night stand with math, and what became so after. You could think of the same, with almost all the late subjects out there. And probably a real life application of these works out every where you go, with technology being an example. From the earliest known use of a wheel, being a real-life crossover of math (radius of the wheel), physics (motion of the wheel), and well masonry (how do you think you make the wheel?), to the anything recent, with development of new fruits through hybridization, jobs involving roles of more than 3-4 individual jobs and well, us, a literal aftermath of a crossover event between two characters (*wink wink*).

And who knows, with almost everything around us evolving everyday, it's a crossover of multiple things. So coming back to the question raised in the title, you can never really tell what actually is 'The Most Ambitious Crossover Of All Time'.

**AUTHOR'S NOTE**

If you've made it all the way here after all the geek-dom, you're awesome. If you've clicked here, expecting a review of sorts for the movie, I won't blame you, I tried to make it as click-baity as possible. Did it work though? You be the judge :)

But if you're still here to here my review about the movie, you're in luck.

I saw the movie on the first day it hit theaters, and the week before that, despite the finals happening, I was hyped. Watching trailers, interviews, speculations, theories and clips, in the meanwhile, trying to avoid spoilers for it too. Though I eventually get caught up with a few spoilers, I tried my best, to forget them. Only two times, have I ever did so for a movie, the first being Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

So hours before I entered the hall, my head was speculating of how scenes would play out, what might happen, and the most curious question raised since the trailer launched, Who was going to die? And 2 hours 40 minutes later, and by God, was I surprised, while a tiny bit of speculation wound up being true, the majority was shock and awe. Truly, taking the MCU in a different tone, and in an appetizing way. Though moments of confusion arised at times, asking to myself 'What?', 'Why?', 'How?' 'What about him/her?' and 'WHY?!?!?!?' .Though as cliched as it may sound, Avengers: Infinity War wasn't a movie, it was an event, an actual comic-book event turning out in real-life, from several years built in hype and it amazingly works out beautifully. An event, bringing out my inner 12-year jumping in joy within minutes. An event, even making me shook, hours after watching it, by its symbolism, deep meaning and of course easter-eggs that were placed.

I'm sure it may not matter, with reviews out in all sorts of media outlets, but if given a chance to summarize it in a few words, I would say, Avengers: Infinity War was an deliciously appetizing 2h 40 minute starter, to an eagerly awaiting main-course'.

So, if you guys feel the same or different about the movie, I'm curious, so do let me know, about the experience, but remember #ThanosDemandsYourSilence.

As always, appreciate that feedback :)

Tak Et Ton Og Farvel,

Dull McDummy Face.
